I think that is a good match.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">His good looks probably contributed to his favor with the ladies.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8212;-<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Early on in my research, my first clue that one of the Clemons family was in Michigan was the listing in his father&#8217;s probate records, of a son Alfred, living in Tuscola, Michigan. If I had not seen the probate records, I doubt I would have found Alfred so readily, as all the rest of the family stayed in NY state.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Later I found the record of his military service. Frederick Clemons, Private, Co. C, 186th NY Inf. enlisted Aug. 23, 1864, discharged June 7, 1865, served 9 mos., 15 days. \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 There is a story that Fred was discharged in Atlanta and had to walk all the way home to Michigan. Arriving in Tuscola about dusk he saw a lady through a window and said that was the girl he would marry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I think this is a tall tale that was exaggerated by repeated telling. Sounds like Fred was an all-around good guy who likely told a few stories himself, or at least elicited stories on his behalf.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In fact, he was mustered out in Alexandria, Va. and he is listed in the 1865 census in Oswego County, NY with his parents and noted &#8220;formerly in the army&#8221;. At this time his first wife, Ermina, and her parents were already in Tuscola. He likely went to Tuscola after his service tour and he was married to Ermina in 1870 by the Justice of Peace in Tuscola.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ethelingalls.com\/Digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/olderalfredDD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-447\" title=\"olderalfredDD\" src=\"http:\/\/ethelingalls.com\/Digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/olderalfredDD-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ethelingalls.com\/Digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/olderalfredDD-196x300.jpg 196w, http:\/\/ethelingalls.com\/Digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/olderalfredDD.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div>This is not the picture of Fred Clemons that accompanied the article reprinted in the Douglass Digest but it is very similar.
