{"id":181,"date":"2011-08-28T23:33:21","date_gmt":"2011-08-29T03:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ethelingalls.com\/Digest\/?page_id=181"},"modified":"2011-08-29T00:25:46","modified_gmt":"2011-08-29T04:25:46","slug":"child-topography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/ethelingalls.com\/Digest\/poetry\/child-topography\/","title":{"rendered":"Child Topography"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>          Here is where\r\n            I climbed\r\n     Steeply tilted hillsides\r\n       Gnarled apple trees\r\n         Fences of stone\r\n      Nearly vertical stairs\r\n          To my bedroom\r\n      Ladders to the haymow\r\n       Or up the silo chute\r\n\r\n          Here is where\r\n             I walked\r\n       Through grasshoppers\r\n          Pregnant corn\r\n        Black-eyed susans\r\n         Dust powder dry\r\n         Dark ferny woods\r\n            Muddy ooze\r\n      Rock slippery streams\r\n\r\n        Learning the earth\r\n           With my feet\r\n           And the life\r\n         With my sinews.\r\n\r\n              Here I\r\n             Carried\r\n   Pails of warm fragrant milk\r\n     Soft downy newborn pigs\r\n         Acrid fertilizer\r\n           Bales of hay\r\n     Buckets of gathered eggs\r\n    Still smelling of the nest\r\n\r\n              Here I\r\n              Pulled\r\n      The long hay rope back\r\n    Weeds from the garden rows\r\n       My body into my tree\r\n         Milk-filled tits\r\n      The emptied wagon rack\r\n    Feathers from scalded hens\r\n\r\n              Here I\r\n              Pushed\r\n   Corn stalks into the cutter\r\n   Needles through garment hems\r\n     My brother in his wagon\r\n           The wet mop\r\n     Across the kitchen floor\r\n    The calves into their pens\r\n\r\n        Learning the earth\r\n           With my feet\r\n          Learning life\r\n         With my sinews.\r\n\r\n          Here is where\r\n             I search\r\n      Time eroded landmarks\r\n        Sun shimmered days\r\n        Fields gone fallow\r\n      Faint flitting echoes\r\n            Unfamiliar\r\n         Familiar places.\r\n\r\n          Here is where\r\n           I learn life\r\n          With my heart.\r\n\r\n- Ethel L.
