Somehow around Christmas
\nI lose lots of things —
\nA plethora of pens I have in the house
\nBut to write on a tag requires a great roust;
\nThe scotch tape? Now I had it right here–
\nWhere do I find it?
\nUnder these cards of good cheer.
\nOn the way to the kitchen
\nI catch my toe on a sack,
\nStop to move it aside
\nAnd find (oops!) Santa’s pack.
\nThe list of the gifts I have yet to buy–
\nGetting shorter for sure —
\nBut won’t meet my eye!
\nI scrabble thru purse, piles
\nOn floor and on bed
\nLike some frantic mouse;
\nNow I’ve a pain in my head.
\nSo I’ve sat myself down
\nWith a hot cup of tea
\nTo compose these few lines
\nTo E-mail you, just from me.
\nWhen all of the paper, the glitter and bows
\nAnd lists and boxes that jump at my toes
\nAre gone for the season, I’ll heave a great sigh
\nOf relief – for a time – and then as I sit
\nI’ll fondly remember the confusion
\nAnd the happy secrets that come with it.
\nSo what! if around Christmas
\nI lose a few things?
